Amelanotic conjunctival melanoma

2006

Conjunctival melanoma is a rare condition of the eye pigment predominantly affecting white adults. We describe a 32-year-old white man with an amelanotic malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva that is not associated with primary acquired melanosis (PAM) or melanocytic nevus. The patient presented with a 2-year history of nonpigmented vascularized nodules of the right eye. Results of hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) staining of the lesion showed an invasive nodule with vertical spreading, invasion of the substantia propria corneae, and ulceration. S100 protein was expressed in the cells of the invasive nodule. HMB45 protein was highly positive in the melanoma cells. The de novo amelanotic mali…

Oral amelanotic melanoma: a case report

2014

Objectives. Primary oral melanoma is a very rare malignancy, representing about 0.5% of all melanomas, characterized by a wide clinical-histological variability and a very aggressive behavior. Aim of the present study is to describe a case of oral amelanotic melanoma, an infrequent variant with a poorer prognosis than that of pigmented melanomas for a more aggressive biological behavior and frequent delays for the correct diagnosis and for starting the treatment. Case report. A 53-year-old white man referred at the Department Surgical, Oncological and Oral Sciences for a macular, scarsely pigmented lesion with irregular margins, located on anterior region of hard palate. The lesion, complet…

Comparative expression of cyclooxygenase 2 and Ki67 in amelanotic and conventional oral melanomas

2020

Background Oral melanomas have some histopathological resemblance with its cutaneous counterpart; however, an aggressive behavior is more common in tumors that occur in the oral cavity. Several markers have been suggested as indicative of tumoral progression and aggressiveness, such as cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and Ki67. Material and Methods In this study, we have compared the expression of COX-2 and Ki67 in a series of amelanotic (n=7) and melanotic oral melanomas (n=22). The cases were selected from 4 pathology laboratories and submitted to the immunohistochemical (IHC) reactions. We analyzed the IHC staining based on a qualitative – using visual scores; and a computer-assisted method (qua…

Fixed oil from seeds of narrow-leaved ash (F. angustifolia subsp. angustifolia): Chemical profile, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities.

2019

Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. angustifolia is a plant with an age-old use for the production of manna. However, it is also a valuable source of fixed oil rich-seeds. In the present study we examined the chemical and biological properties of this oil in order to support a possible application in foodstuffs, nutraceuticals and cosmetics. Fatty acid composition, volatile and phenolic substances were evaluated. Oleic and linoleic acid represented 45.5% and 50.0%, respectively, of the total fatty acid composition. Among polar phenolic substances identified (secoiridoids, phenylethanoid glycosides, phenolic acids and alcohols, flavonoids, coumarins) isoverbascoside is for the first time reported i…
